How Container Quantity Calculator Works?

The Container Quantity Calculator works in 3 steps.

  1. 1

Enter the total mass of product in kilograms (kg).

  2. 2

Set the product density to get the total volume in liters (L).

  3. 3

Divide the volume by the usable container size and round up to the next whole container.

Container Quantity Calculator Formula

The Container Quantity Calculator formula is:

Containers needed = ⌈ Mass (kg) ÷ Density (kg/L) ÷ Container fill volume (L) ⌉

Use the fill volume, not the brim capacity: a 20 L jerrycan filled to 95% holds 19 L.

Worked example

1,000 kg of olive oil ÷ 0.918 kg/L = 1,089.3 L; ÷ 5 L jugs = 217.9, so 218 jugs.

Order 2% to 5% more containers than the result for damaged units and line losses. The rounded-up figure still leaves the last container part-filled.

Container Quantity Calculator Conversion Table

The Container Quantity Calculator table gives the number of containers needed to pack 1,000 kg (2,204.6 lb) of 6 products into 1 L, 5 L, 20 L, 200 L and 1,000 L containers, rounded up to whole containers.

What is Container Quantity Calculator?

The Container Quantity Calculator is a tool that calculates the number of containers needed for a mass of product. Production planners know the batch weight, and buyers need a container count.

The sample table shows 6 products packed into 5 container sizes. Dense products such as honey need far fewer containers per tonne than light products such as diesel.

What are the uses of Container Quantity Calculator?

There are 4 main uses of the Container Quantity Calculator: packaging orders, filling-line planning, export loads and event supplies.

  • Packaging orders

Buyers order the right number of bottles for a batch.

  • Filling-line planning

Planners schedule line time from container counts.

  • Export loads

Shippers count drums or totes per container load.

  • Event supplies

Organizers count water bottles for a set mass of supply.
