Density Calculator
The Density Calculator finds density (ρ) by dividing a measured mass in kilograms (kg) by a measured volume in liters (L).

How Density Calculator Works?
The Density Calculator works in 3 steps.
- 1
Weigh the sample and note the net mass in kilograms (kg) or grams (g).
- 2
Measure the sample volume in liters (L) or milliliters (mL) with a graduated cylinder or by water displacement.
- 3
Divide mass by volume to get density in kg/L, then read the kg/m³ and lb/ft³ values in the table.
Density Calculator Formula
The Density Calculator formula is:
Density ρ (kg/L) = Mass (kg) ÷ Volume (L)Multiply kg/L by 1,000 for kg/m³ and by 62.428 for lb/ft³.
Worked example
A 500 mL (0.5 L) sample of honey weighing 0.71 kg: ρ = 0.71 ÷ 0.5 = 1.42 kg/L (1,420 kg/m³, 88.65 lb/ft³).
Measure mass and volume at the same temperature. A density measured at 30 °C (86 °F) gives a slightly smaller value than one measured at 15 °C (59 °F) for most liquids.
Density Calculator Conversion Table
The Density Calculator table shows 8 worked density results, each from a measured mass and volume.

| Steel block | 7.85 | 1 | 7.85 | 7,850 | 490.059 |
| Seawater | 20.5 | 20 | 1.025 | 1,025 | 63.989 |
| Air (15 °C) | 1.225 | 1,000 | 0.001225 | 1.225 | 0.076 |
What is Density Calculator?
The Density Calculator is a tool that calculates density from 2 measurements: mass and volume. Density tells you how many kilograms fit in one liter of a material, and the value drives every kg-to-liter conversion on LitersToKg.com.
The calculator accepts any sample size. A small 100 mL sample gives a fast reading, while a 1 L or larger sample reduces the effect of a 1 g scale error.
What are the uses of Density Calculator?
There are 4 main uses of the Density Calculator: product identification, purity checks, science classes and custom conversions.
Product identification
Inspectors check whether a fuel or oil matches the density on the specification sheet.
Purity checks
Beekeepers and dairies detect added water when density drops below the normal range.
Science classes
Students calculate the density of water, oil and metal blocks in physics practicals.
Custom conversions
Users find a density first, then enter that value in the Custom Density Converter.
Density Calculator FAQ
What is the formula for density?
Density equals mass divided by volume (ρ = m ÷ V). 2 kg of liquid in 2.5 L has a density of 0.8 kg/L.
How do I measure the volume of an irregular object?
Measure the volume by water displacement: submerge the object in a graduated container and read the rise in milliliters.
