Net Mass Converter
The Net Mass Converter subtracts packaging (tare) weight from gross weight, then converts the net contents mass in kilograms into liters.

How Net Mass Converter Works?
The Net Mass Converter works in 3 steps.
- 1
Weigh the full container to get the gross mass in kilograms (kg).
- 2
Subtract the tare mass of the empty drum, can or tote, then enter the net mass.
- 3
Set the contents density and read the true liquid volume in liters (L).
Net Mass Converter Formula
The Net Mass Converter formula is:
Volume (L) = (Gross mass − Tare mass) (kg) ÷ Density (kg/L)Net mass (kg) = Gross mass (kg) − Tare mass (kg).
Worked example
A 200 L drum of diesel weighs 184 kg gross with 17.5 kg tare: (184 − 17.5) ÷ 0.832 = 200.1 L.
Tare masses vary by container type. A 200 L steel drum weighs 15 kg to 22 kg empty, a 20 L plastic jerrycan about 1 kg to 1.5 kg, and a 1,000 L IBC tote about 55 kg to 65 kg.
Net Mass Converter Conversion Table
The Net Mass Converter table shows 6 packed containers with gross mass, tare mass, net contents mass and the resulting liquid volume.
| Container | Contents | Gross (kg) | Tare (kg) | Net (kg) | Volume (L) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 200 L steel drum | Diesel | 184 | 17.5 | 166.5 | 200.12 |
| 20 L jerrycan | Olive Oil | 19.8 | 1.4 | 18.4 | 20.04 |
| 1,000 L IBC tote | Water | 1,062 | 62 | 1,000 | 1,000 |
| 25 kg honey pail | Honey | 26.2 | 0.8 | 25.4 | 17.89 |
| 5 L paint tin | Paint | 7 | 0.5 | 6.5 | 5 |
| 10 L detergent can | Liquid Detergent | 11.1 | 0.6 | 10.5 | 10 |
What is Net Mass Converter?
The Net Mass Converter is a calculator that removes packaging weight before converting mass to volume. Scales report gross mass, which includes the container, lid, pallet and liner. Only the net mass relates to the volume of the contents.
Skipping the tare step overstates the volume. A 20 L jerrycan of olive oil reads 19.8 kg gross; dividing the gross figure by 0.918 kg/L gives 21.57 L, while the correct net result is 20.04 L.
What are the uses of Net Mass Converter?
There are 4 main uses of the Net Mass Converter: goods-in checks, stock counts, filling-line audits and customs declarations.
Goods-in checks
Warehouses confirm that a delivered drum holds the invoiced liters.
Stock counts
Bars and restaurants weigh part-used containers to count remaining liters.
Filling-line audits
Packers check that each container holds the declared volume.
Customs declarations
Exporters report net volume and net mass separately from gross shipping weight.
Net Mass Converter FAQ
What is tare weight?
Tare weight is the mass of the empty container and packaging. Gross weight minus tare weight equals net weight.
Do I include the pallet in tare weight?
Yes, include the pallet in tare weight if the scale reading includes the pallet. A wooden pallet adds 15 kg to 25 kg.
